Strong at heart

In Europe, we see people walking their dogs on sunny weekends, but it was in Beijing I first saw people “walking” their birds, as a form of socialising. I took my camera to show the contrast between a very awake bird and a still sleeping tree – when I realised the shadow behind the tree on the wall. It was as if the small tree was much greater in reality, casting a strong and confident shadow, sending a clear message: don’t judge me by the looks! To me this picture represents not just the many contrasts in all walks of life in China, but also the feeling that you can never know at first sight what really lays below the surface.

  1. Nice angles, and I love knowing that even caged birds are allowed some fresh air and a new location.
