Megalopolis

This watercolour brings together many aspects that comes to my mind when I think about China as a European.
The painting talks about the relationship between urban development and nature, a balance that represents a big challenge for China’s future. The megalopolis is painted with style and colors inspired by the german painter Paul Klee (1879–1940), which I admire very much. The city shows a superposition of layers, that are the different cultures and languages coexisting in it. Calligraphy plays also an important symbolic role in the picture, being an art form with deep roots both in China and in Europe, reaching beautiful and very different forms of expression. Calligraphy, with the abstraction that sometimes characterizes it, represents also at the same time the charm and the difficulty of communication between cultures.
