Lanting Xu (兰亭序) – Preface to the Orchid Pavilion

Lanting Xu (蘭亭序) is the most famous work of calligraphy. It was composed by Wang Xizhi (王羲之) in the year 353. Written in running script – Xingshu (行書), it is among the best known and often copied pieces of calligraphy in Chinese history. The Preface consists of 324 Chinese characters in 28 lines. In the original masterpiece, the character zhī (之) appears 20 times, but no two look the same, which is considered one of the features of this work that constitute its calligraphic excellence.
In my Lanting Xu I have gone in the opposite direction. In my artwork the characters, although made with a brush, have an almost typographical shape, such identical characters have an identical graphical representation, thus creating a “jungle of signs”.
