It´s 15th century, the Ming dynasty reigns China. My name is Meifeng and I live in a small village that happens to be 10 li (5 kilometres) away from the Shaolin temple. I am an ordinary poor girl doing her best to help my family, selling fish and herbs, trying not to disappoint my parents. I honestly never thought my life could ever be the way it is now.
Seven months ago I went to the forest to pick some mushrooms or herbs and met a mysterious man who was there to practice wushu. He calls himself Zuko Ma and has the most beautiful spark in his eyes and absolutely charming smile. But that is not as important as the fact that he is nice, smart, caring, witty and understanding. I don´t remember why, but we agreed on writing each other. Every week I go to the place where we met for the first time and leave a note for him under a big stone. Then he picks it and does the same thing. From strangers we became friends and that was good enough, but something weird happened inside my heart… I can´t explain those feelings, but after writing with him for few months and getting to know him through the letters I realized that I liked him more than a friend. Something like this never happened to me, but we really got along and I couldn´t stop thinking about him.
There are many problems standing in our way, but true love can overcome it all. Zuko Ma is an apprentice in temple of Shaolin which means that love is practically forbidden for him. He uncomplainingly follows all the Shaolin rules but this one. I have to work for my family and take care of my three younger siblings and on top of that we live sort of far away so it would be very hard to start a relationship with Zuko Ma. Despite that I want to trust the stars. We have something special between us and it may work out.
One day I came to our place and he was already there even though he should have been in the temple. So instead of exchanging letters we simply sat down under the old Bodhi tree and talked and talked and talked. Time passed and I suddenly noticed that the daylight begun to fade. I kind of panicked and told him that I have to quickly run home. When I stood up he caught my hand, pulled me back down, smiled and kissed me. That one moment was the most intense and memorable moment of the year maybe of my whole life…
We found our way to make it work and I am truly thankful for that. We usually keep our conversation like it used to be – via letters, but now and then we meet, hug and kiss and Zuko Ma makes me the happiest girl on Earth.
